Inca Trail Closure February 2026: Every year, the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu undergoes a rigorous conservation process. For February 2026, the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park authorities and the Cusco Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) have confirmed that the trail will be closed from Saturday, January 31, until February 28, officially reopening on March 1.
At Samex Tours Peru, we explain why this measure is essential and how you can still experience the magic of the Andes without setbacks.

Why is the Inca Trail Closing in February 2026? Conservation and Safety
As detailed by the Minister of Culture, Alfredo Luna, the closure serves two fundamental purposes: the preservation of the archaeological heritage and the safety of tourists during the peak of the Andean rainy season.
During this period, a technical team of 60 specialists and skilled workers will deploy from Piscacucho to maintain:
15 Archaeological Sites: Conservation work at key sites including Salapuku, Qhanabamba, Qoriwayrachina, Willkaraqay, Patallaqta, Tunasmoqo, Pawkarkancha, Patawasi, Sayacmarca, Qonchamarca, Phuyupatamarca, Intipunku, Wiñaywayna, Chachabamba, and Choquesuysuy.
Critical Infrastructure: Rehabilitation of stone paths, maintenance of retaining walls, wooden bridges, ramps, and railings.
Slope Stabilization: In coordination with SERNANP, geogrids will be installed to prevent landslides and ensure the structural integrity of the trail network.

Transportation Alert: The Hiram Bingham Route (Buses)
Exclusive for 2026 is the updated status of the bus service to the citadel. Due to the annulment of previous tenders, the Ministry of Transport (MTC) has issued an emergency decree for the Regional Government of Cusco (Gore Cusco) to take control of the route. This ensures a formal, safe service with reliable schedules, allowing the municipal company of Machu Picchu to operate temporarily while a new tender is finalized.
Your Best Options for Visiting in February
Although the Inca Trail is closed, Machu Picchu remains open. The usual flow of 500 people per day is redirected toward other incredible experiences:
1. Salkantay Trek: The Epic Alternative
Ranked by National Geographic as one of the best hikes in the world, the Salkantay Trek is the top choice for those seeking a physical challenge, majestic glaciers, and high-jungle landscapes.
2. An Engineering Marvel: Tipón
The Ministry of Culture highly recommends visiting the Tipón Hydraulic Complex. This masterpiece of Incan engineering is dedicated to the cult of water and is perfect for a deep cultural experience away from the crowds.
3. Other Trekking & Cultural Routes
Lares Trek: Ideal for cultural immersion and authentic interaction with Andean communities.
Inca Jungle Trek: A dynamic mix of mountain biking and hiking through the cloud forest.
Choquequirao: Note that this route also undergoes maintenance due to its rugged terrain, but remains a top option for the reopening months.
