Itinerary

Day 1Arequipa | Volcano Viewpoint | Chivay | Town of Yanque | Condor Viewpoint | Arequipa

Embark on an early morning journey from Arequipa, around 3:30 am, ensuring ample time to fully experience the wonders of the Colca Canyon. As we venture into the canyon, be captivated by the awe-inspiring mountain vistas and rugged terrain.

Our first stop takes us to the quaint Andean community of Pata Wasi, translating to “High Home.” Here, amidst intriguing rock formations, catch glimpses of the majestic Chachani and Misti volcanoes. To aid with altitude adjustment, indulge in a traditional coca tea.

Approaching the city of Chivay, nestled at an elevation of 12,000 feet (3,600 m) above sea level, marvel at the vibrant agricultural terraces adorning the Colca Valley, some dating back to the Inca era. Following breakfast, we journey to the renowned Cruz del Cóndor (Cross of the Condor) viewpoint, arriving around 8 a.m.

Nestled near the hamlets of Maca and Cabanaconde, this viewpoint is renowned for its strong canyon winds, attracting the magnificent Andean condors, the world’s largest flying birds. Witness these majestic creatures, with their impressive three-meter wingspans, gracefully soaring near the viewpoint, offering a truly majestic spectacle.

After observing the condors and capturing memorable photos, embark on a short 45-minute walk near the canyon with your guide. We then return to Chivay, making stops at the traditional town of Pinchollo and the Antahuilque viewpoint.

Here, marvel at the ancient agricultural terraces, resembling an amphitheater, and catch sight of enchanting lagoons dotting the Colca Valley. Our journey continues to the Choquetico viewpoint, where we’ll encounter intriguing features, including the hanging tombs crafted by the Aymara-speaking Collagua around 1200 AD, and the litomaquette, a rock-carved model depicting the canyon terraces.

Explore the charming Andean town of Maca, nestled amidst the Sabancaya volcano and the Nevado Hualca Hualca. Next, visit the town of Yanque, home to a picturesque white church, a small archaeology museum, and soothing thermal baths by the river. Conclude our exploration with a delightful lunch in Chivay before returning to Arequipa.

I recently embarked on the full-day tour to Colca Canyon from Arequipa, and it was an absolutely breathtaking experience from start to finish. The early morning start was well worth it as we journeyed through the stunning Andean landscapes, with the towering Misti and Chachani volcanoes providing a dramatic backdrop.

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, where we had the privilege of witnessing the magnificent Andean condors soaring gracefully above the canyon. The sight of these majestic creatures against the backdrop of the rugged canyon walls was truly awe-inspiring. The tour was expertly organized, with informative commentary from our guide at each stop, and the opportunity to explore charming Andean towns like Yanque and Maca added an extra layer of cultural richness to the experience. Overall, it was an unforgettable journey that exceeded all expectations.
