Tiahuanaco: Embark on a fascinating journey to the heart of the Andean world, exploring the sacred ruins of Tiwanaku and the enigmatic stone complex of Puma Punku. Known as one of the most important pre-Columbian civilizations in South America, Tiwanaku reveals monumental temples, carved monoliths, and the iconic Gateway of the Sun. Nearby, Puma Punku captivates travelers with its massive stone blocks, precise cuts, and mysterious origin stories. Together, these archaeological wonders offer a profound connection to the spiritual and engineering brilliance of the ancient Andean people.
Highlights
07:30 am – Departure from La Paz
Pick-up from your hotel and departure by private transport towards the highlands west of La Paz. During the drive across the Altiplano, your guide will introduce you to the history of the Tiwanaku civilization, which flourished for more than two millennia, long before the Inca Empire.
09:30 am – Arrival at Tiwanaku
Upon reaching the archaeological site, located 70 km from La Paz at an altitude of 3,900 m, you begin exploring the ruins of what was once the administrative, political, economic, and religious capital of the Andean peoples. This culture, born around 1500 BC and reaching its peak around 1200 AD, mysteriously collapsed, possibly due to a cataclysm.
10:00 am – Guided tour of Tiwanaku ruins
Discover monumental constructions made from giant stone blocks weighing 5, 10, and even 20 tons each. Visit iconic structures such as the Akapana Pyramid, the Kalasasaya Temple, and admire the famous monoliths including Bennett (Pachamama), Ponce, and El Fraile. The highlight is the Gateway of the Sun, a masterpiece of Andean stonework and cosmology.
11:30 am – Exploration of Puma Punku
Continue to the nearby site of Puma Punku, an enigmatic complex famous for its megalithic stone blocks carved with incredible precision. Some of the structures remain a mystery to archaeologists due to their sophisticated design and massive size.
12:30 pm – Visit to the on-site museums
Stop at the Lithic Museum and Ceramics Museum, where you will find artifacts that reveal the daily life, art, and engineering knowledge of this great civilization.
01:30 pm – Lunch in Tiwanaku town
Enjoy a local lunch in a traditional restaurant, tasting Andean flavors that connect you with the cultural roots of the region.
02:30 pm – Free time and cultural interaction
Walk around the small town of Tiwanaku, meet local artisans, and observe their traditional crafts. This is a great opportunity to purchase souvenirs such as handwoven textiles or ceramics inspired by ancient designs.
03:00 pm – Return journey to La Paz
Board the transport back to La Paz while reflecting on the cultural and spiritual legacy of Tiwanaku, one of South America’s most important ancient civilizations.
05:00 pm – Arrival in La Paz
Drop-off at your hotel. End of the tour.
