The Uyuni Salt Flats Experience – 3 Days / 2 Nights is an unforgettable journey through Bolivia’s most iconic landscapes. Starting from the town of Uyuni, this adventure combines the surreal beauty of the world’s largest salt flat, the cultural charm of local villages, and the breathtaking scenery of the Andean highlands. Over three days, you will explore the Train Cemetery, the cactus-covered Incahuasi Island, and enjoy a unique picnic in the middle of the salt desert. Witness the famous sunset over the Salar de Uyuni and capture the iconic perspective photos that make this destination so magical.
The tour continues across the Altiplanic desert, where flamingos gather at colorful lagoons such as the Laguna Colorada, framed by the surreal Stone Tree in the Siloli Desert. On the final day, you’ll start at sunrise by the Sol de Mañana geysers, relax in natural hot springs, and explore the dreamlike Dalí Desert before reaching the mystical Green and White Lagoons at the base of the Licancabur Volcano. This well-rounded itinerary combines nature, culture, and adventure, offering the best of the Bolivian altiplano in just three days.
Highlights:
Your journey begins at 10:00 am, guided by an experienced local expert who will introduce you to the wonders of the Bolivian highlands. The first stop is the legendary Train Cemetery, where rusting locomotives tell the story of Uyuni’s mining past. Next, visit a local handicraft center and a small salt-processing workshop, where you can see how salt bricks and crafts are produced by local families.
We then continue to the first Salt Hotel, an iconic landmark built entirely from blocks of salt, before heading deeper into the salt flat. The highlight of the morning is Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop in the middle of the Salar covered with giant cacti that rise over 15 meters high. From the island’s viewpoint, you’ll enjoy breathtaking 360° panoramic views of the endless white desert.
At midday, enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the salt flat, surrounded by surreal landscapes. In the afternoon, take time for creative perspective photography, a tradition in Uyuni where the salt flat’s flat horizon allows for playful and unforgettable images. As the sun sets, the Salar transforms into a magical canvas of colors, offering one of the most unforgettable sunset experiences in South America. Overnight stay in basic local accommodation.
After breakfast, the adventure continues towards the Ollagüe Volcano viewpoint, where you can admire an active volcano that straddles the Chilean border. From there, we journey through a chain of Altiplanic lagoons, each with unique colors and often populated by Andean flamingos feeding in the shallow waters.
Crossing the Siloli Desert, a striking expanse of wind-sculpted landscapes, you will stop to see the famous Stone Tree (Árbol de Piedra), a natural rock formation shaped like a tree. The day’s highlight is the arrival at the stunning Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada), whose deep crimson waters are colored by algae and minerals. With its flamingo colonies and dramatic mountain backdrop, this is one of Bolivia’s most iconic natural wonders. Overnight stay in basic local accommodation near Laguna Colorada.
The day begins before sunrise, heading to the Sol de Mañana geysers, a geothermal field filled with bubbling mud pools and fumaroles that emit steam at over 90°C. The early morning light creates an otherworldly scene, perfect for photography. Afterward, take time to relax in the natural thermal springs, where you can soak in warm mineral waters surrounded by high-altitude landscapes.
The journey continues through the surreal Dalí Desert, named after the famous painter due to its dreamlike rock formations and colors. Next, visit the striking Green Lagoon (Laguna Verde) and the White Lagoon (Laguna Blanca), located at the foot of the snow-capped Licancabur Volcano. The contrasting colors of the lagoons against the volcanic backdrop make this a truly unforgettable sight.
On the return journey to Uyuni, pass through the Valley of Rocks, a dramatic landscape of volcanic rock formations, and stop at the traditional mining village of San Cristóbal before arriving back in town in the late afternoon.
