Itinerary

Day 1CUSCO – CHINCHERO – MARAS MORAY SALINERAS – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES

Your journey begins with a private pick-up from your hotel in Cusco in a spacious, air-conditioned vehicle carefully selected to provide extra comfort and floor space for your certified service or emotional support animal.

Our first stop is Chinchero, a picturesque Andean village known for its living textile traditions and colonial church built over Inca foundations. Here, you will visit a traditional weaving center where local artisans demonstrate ancestral techniques using natural dyes and alpaca wool. The visit is relaxed and unhurried, allowing shaded rest areas for your service companion.

We then continue to Moray, an extraordinary archaeological site featuring circular agricultural terraces believed to have functioned as an Inca agricultural laboratory. Surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, this site offers a fascinating insight into Inca engineering and innovation.

Next, we visit the breathtaking Maras Salt Mines, where thousands of white salt pools cascade down the mountainside. This centuries-old salt extraction system remains active today and provides one of the most visually stunning panoramas in the Sacred Valley.

Our final Sacred Valley stop is Ollantaytambo, known as the “Living Inca City.” You will explore its impressive stone terraces, ceremonial areas, and original Inca streets that are still inhabited. Strategic breaks are scheduled throughout the day to ensure your service animal remains comfortable, hydrated, and relaxed.

In the afternoon, we transfer to the train station. All required pre-registration with PeruRail or Inca Rail is handled in advance to secure authorization for your service or emotional support animal.

Enjoy a scenic train journey through the Andes to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), where you will check into a carefully selected, service-dog–friendly hotel for the night.

Day 2MACHUPICCHU GUIDED TOUR – CUSCO

After breakfast at your hotel, we escort you to the shuttle bus station for the ascent to Machu Picchu. Boarding logistics are carefully coordinated to ensure a smooth and organized experience.
Upon arrival at the sanctuary, you will enjoy a private guided visit to Machu Picchu. Your experience will follow the official circuit assigned at the time of booking, allowing you to explore panoramic viewpoints, ceremonial areas, and architectural sectors included in your entrance ticket category.
Your expert guide will adapt the pace to your comfort level and prioritize less crowded sections whenever possible. Scheduled pauses are incorporated to safeguard the well-being of your service companion while allowing time for photography and quiet appreciation of the surrounding cloud forest and majestic Andean scenery.
After the guided visit, we descend to Machu Picchu Pueblo and board the train back to the Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, private transportation will be waiting to transfer you comfortably to your hotel in Cusco, concluding your exclusive two-day experience.

Essential Guidelines for Traveling with your Service Dog

1. Mandatory Documentation (Crucial for Entry)

To access the Machu Picchu citadel and use local transportation, it is mandatory to present:

  1. Service Animal or Emotional Support Certificate: Must be valid (issued less than 1 year ago) and signed by a mental health or medical professional.
  2. Health Certificate: Issued by a licensed veterinarian within 15 to 30 days prior to your visit to the Sanctuary.
  3. Vaccination Records: Must be up to date, including the signature and seal of the veterinary clinic.
  4. Important: Failure to provide any of these documents will result in the cancellation of the visit with your animal.

2. Requirements for Entering Peru (SENASA)

Before arriving in the country, travelers must comply with national sanitary regulations:

  1. Export Sanitary Certificate: Issued by the official veterinary authority of your country of origin.

  2. Rabies Vaccination: Administered at least 60 days prior to travel.

  3. Deworming Certificate: Issued within 30 days prior to boarding.

3. Transport and Train Logistics

  1. Pre-registration: Documents must be sent to the agency at least 2 weeks before your trip to coordinate with Peru Rail or Inca Rail.

  2. Train Fare: Railway companies typically charge a fare similar to a child’s ticket for the animal’s space.

  3. Flights: If flying with LATAM, please review their specific service animal policies before departure.

4. Instructions within Machu Picchu

  1. Limit: Only one animal per person is allowed inside the sanctuary.
  2. Safety Control: The dog must always wear its harness and leash (or be in a specialized pet carrier backpack).
  3. Route Restrictions: Access to certain sub-circuits within the citadel is restricted for animals.
  4. Hygiene: It is highly recommended that the dog relieves itself before boarding the bus from Aguas Calientes to the citadel.

5. Preparation and Well-being of your "Furry Friend"

  1. Basic Gear: Travelers must bring water, a portable water bowl, snacks, and waste bags.

  2. Acclimatization: It is essential for the animal to be acclimated to the altitude of Cusco before starting the tours.

  3. Information for the Agency: Please provide your dog’s weight, size, breed, a photo, and a description of its behavior in advance to personalize our service.

Taking a service dog on a boat in Lake Titicaca was our biggest worry, but the Samex team was incredibly patient. They made sure our Labrador had a safe spot on the vessel and even helped us navigate the floating islands of Uros without any stress. It’s rare to find an agency that doesn’t just ‘allow’ service animals but actually knows how to accommodate them properly. Truly inclusive service in the Altiplano!

Finding an agency that truly understands how to travel with a service dog to Machu Picchu was a relief. Samex Tours did an incredible job with the logistics for our 2-day trip. They knew exactly how to handle the train requirements and the park entry for my service dog, Cooper. Our guide was extremely respectful and made sure we were comfortable at every step. It was a dream come true to visit the citadel with my companion. Thank you for being so inclusive and professional!
